In loving memory of Michael Reed Phillips Sr. born March 19, 1956. With broken hearts we announce his passing on Wednesday, October 30, 2024. Michael was born in Des Moines, Iowa and had two sons Michael R Phillips Jr and Chase Cubacub Phillips whom he took great pride in. Michael lived in Des Moines and then Johnston, Iowa where he attended high school and was a resident of Waukee where he passed peacefully in his home. Michael received his degree at DMACC in computer programming and was employed by the Iowa Department of Transportation for several years where he planned to retire. He had an excellent work ethic and was very conscientious in his work
Michael had many talents including playing the guitar and banjo, which was self-taught. Both his sons inherited his musical talents. In early years he played in a bluegrass band and always showed up with his ponytail and motorcycle. In recent years he enjoyed an occasional jam session with his neighbor, where they would play on the deck outside for all to hear and an occasional jam session with both his sons. Nothing seemed to make him happier than his music. Michael also owned motorcycles and always enjoyed riding until he got older but in his younger days he loved off-roading with his jeep as well.
Michael was in the Navy and also had the opportunity to travel to China, Costa Rica and all over the US when he drove a truck. Michael had an open minded attitude toward all and was well liked among his neighbors, peers and work team. Mike lived a full and satisfied life as far as he was concerned.
Michael had a large family with three brothers and three sisters and enjoyed family gatherings and all the great food especially at the holidays. Michael was preceded in death by his younger sister Deborah and his parents John and Joyce Herron. He is survived by his two sons Michael Jr and Chase, two sisters Janet Reynolds and Susan Johnson, three brothers Rick Herron (Leyda), Brian Herron (Jenny) and Brock Herron (Luann).
He will be truly missed by all including his neighbors, but we know he is in heaven playing his guitar for Mama who loved to hear him play.
The family will be planning a celebration of life in the near future and will send out an invitation to friends and family once all is settled.
Ernst Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Waukee has been entrusted with Michael's final arrangements.
