Kara Beth Tornell

Kara Beth Tornell (Steinkraus), 46, went home to the Lord on December 22, 2021. Kara was an incredibly loving daughter, sister, wife, and mother.

Kara was born on March 5, 1975, in Omaha, NE, to Carol (Grove) Steinkraus. The family moved to Sioux City, IA, where Kara graduated from Bishop Heelan High School in 1993. She met her soulmate, Preston H. Tornell, and they were married on August 17, 1996. Kara and Preston moved to Davenport, IA, while Preston attended Palmer College of Chiropractic. Kara, meanwhile, worked full time and started raising their beautiful family. Upon graduation from Palmer, Kara and Preston, with two daughters, moved back to Sioux City, where she was instrumental in the success of Preston’s chiropractic practice. Kara enjoyed her job working as a third-party evaluator for CCC Information Systems. In 2017, Kara and her family moved to Clive, IA. Kara and Preston loved nothing more than spending time with and raising their seven beautiful children.

Everyone who knew Kara, from her neighbors to her colleagues at CCC, to those she talked with at any length, will remember her easy-going, infectious smile, laugh, sense of humor, and unconditional love for her husband and children. She was a loving, gracious, God-fearing, family-oriented woman who will be dearly missed.

Kara is preceded in death by her mother Carol Curry (74), grandmother Opel Joy Grove. She is survived by her loving and adoring husband of 25 years, Preston, and their children; Elizabeth Hartzler (24) and husband Matthew, Abigail Decker (22) and husband Jacob, Charlize (20), Charles (17), Braeden (14), Victoria (10) and Grayson (4). Kara also leaves behind four siblings.

Preston and the family would especially like to thank nurses Sandy, Alex, and Katie, at Mercy One West Des Moines, for their heroic efforts in fighting for Kara’s life. There is not enough gratitude for what you did, and our family will be forever grateful.

Due to the holiday season, there are no service arrangements at this time. The family will announce a celebration of life gathering in the spring. Please consider a donation to Kara’s GoFundMe.com fund in lieu of flowers, organized by Toni Tornell.

Ernst Funeral & Cremation Services of Waukee has been entrusted with Kara's final arrangements.

I hope the family of Kara reads this and will help to understand the love your father had for your mother. You see I am an old college friend of your father. Even though time has gone on and your father and I haven't seen each other in many years I have never forgotten the day your father met your mother. As I recall, your father was mowing the lawn of the bank your mother worked at. The next day during classes, your father tells me of this most beautiful woman he saw and that he was going to ask her out on a date. To this day I can still hear your father's tone and excitement of seeing, meeting, and then falling in love with your mother. I remember this so vividly b/c your parents had a true love and when they talk about soulmates.....these two were truly that. My heart is soooo sad for your loss. Remember to mourn your mother, have a good cry...but, don't forget to remember the great memories and times. She is still walking among us in the hearts of each of you. She is still with you and she will always be there for you, just as your father will be. Rejoice in knowing that the love your parents had for each other was a true love that started from the first day your father saw your mother. That love is still there and will always be a part of you. From the Labahn Family, much love to you all and be strong through some tough times; remember your mother is still with you.
