Helen Hruby, 94, who was born on April 23, 1924 in Elberon, IA to Frank and Christina (Rayman) Karkosh, passed away on December 14, 2018 at The Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, both at First Presbyterian Church in Toledo, IA. Pastor Thomas Bower will be officiating. Interment to follow at Vining National Cemetery.
Helen attended school in Waltham before moving to Vining in 1939. From 1940 to 1945 she was employed as a manager of a telephone company. On November 14, 1945, Helen married Milton Hruby after his return from the service, and together they moved to Toledo in 1953.
Helen worked at the Toledo H.S. lunch room and then transferred to South Tama H.S. for 16 years before retiring from a local grocery store bakery in 1985. Helen volunteered at the Hawkeye Valley Senior Center, was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served on the Board of Deacons and was a member of the C.S.A. Lodge.
Helen is survived by her daughter Sonja (Larry) Cizek of Waukee, IA; son Gary (Vicki) Hruby of Robins, IA; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one step great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Milton on June 7, 1991, infant twin Helena, brother Louis and sisters Mildred, Lillian and Vera.
