Abbie Ann Green

Abbie Ann Green, 91, of Urbandale, IA, who was born on August 19, 1924 in New Orleans, LA to Herman and Minnie McGowan, passed away July 22, 2016 at Karen Acres Nursing Home in Urbandale, IA. On her 18th birthday, Abbie hopped a train in Chicago and rode to Maryland to meet up with her sailor, Frank. They eloped seven days later on August 27, 1942. Abbie is survived by her children William (Diane) of Des Moines, Richard (Kristi) of Urbandale and Marge (John) Sawerbrey of Omaha; daughter-in-law Dee, eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank, sons Edward and Frank III and sisters Helen and Louise. Due to her wishes, her remains have been donated to Des Moines University. A memorial gathering will be planned at a later date.
